This comprehensive guide covers how to use ChatGPT for SEO in detail. You’ll find valuable insights and prompts used by SEO pros to transform ChatGPT into their virtual SEO assistant.
ChatGPT for SEO: Guide by Experts

Let’s face it: using ChatGPT for SEO is helping experts save time and increase work productivity.

According to a survey by HubSpot, 75% of bloggers and SEO experts believe AI will be able to perform several SEO tasks in the near future.

If you’re an SEO pro, it’s high time you started adapting AI and using it as an assistant to boost SEO quality.

This comprehensive guide covers how to use ChatGPT for SEO in detail. You’ll find valuable insights and prompts used by SEO pros to transform ChatGPT into their virtual SEO assistant.

How to Use ChatGPT for SEO?

Use Case 1. Keyword Research

Keyword research is the foundation pillar of any search engine optimization strategy. If you get this wrong, the entire strategy goes haywire.

Honestly, ChatGPT isn’t the best keyword research tool. But it’s a great virtual assistant for keyword research.

That’s because ChatGPT can help brainstorm a pool of keywords based on a specific niche, topic, or business needs.

Let’s say you own a cake shop in New York and want to grow your visibility in the neighborhood. Here’s the prompt you can use to brainstorm some keywords 👇

Prompt

Persona: You’re an SEO expert for B2C brands and know how to research lucrative keywords for offline brands.

Goal: Perform keyword research for my cake shop in New York City.

Context: My shop sells cakes, muffins, and pastries. Give me seed keywords.

Use Case 2. Keyword Clustering

Keyword clustering is the process of classifying or grouping similar keywords based on search intent. It’s an important part of SEO because, oftentimes, users search for the same thing in different ways.

For example, look at the terms: “king mattress size” and “king size mattress.” The first searcher is looking for measurements, while the other is looking for a purchase. Both the keywords have similar wordings but different search intent.

ChatGPT can aid in keyword clustering.

How?

Ask the artificial intelligence to group keywords based on their search intent, topic, or semantic relevance. Here’s a prompt:

Prompt: [insert keywords]

Cluster the above keywords based on their search intent, topic, and semantic relevance. Give me the answer in a table.

Use Case 3. Generate LSI Keywords

LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) keywords are terms that are conceptually related to the main keyword. Now, Google relies on semantically relevant terms to better understand the context of a web page. And you should, too!

Here’s a prompt to help generate LSIs for the article you’re writing.

Prompt

Context: I’ve written an article focusing on the primary keyword, ‘project management software.’ The article covers various aspects of project management tools, including features comparison, benefits for different team sizes, integration capabilities with other software, and insights into how project management software enhances productivity and collaboration within teams.

Goal: Provide LSI keywords that align with these sub-headers to help improve the SEO and relevance of my article.

Use Case 4. Generate Topic Clusters

Topic clusters include a range of topics linked to a particular keyword or topic. Creating content around these topic clusters helps users find information in detail while signaling search engines that your website has a high degree of authority on the subject.

Use ChatGPT to generate a list of topics on any particular keyword.

Prompt

[insert blog topics]

Goal: Cluster the provided blog topics into categories based on their main focus or theme.

Context: The topics range from specific task management tools and strategies for productivity to the integration of technology in task management. I’m looking for a way to organize these topics into meaningful categories that will make it easier for readers interested in different aspects of task management to navigate the content.

Use Case 5. Get Article Title Ideas

Blog titles are important. They’re the first thing to show up after a query on Google or any other search engine. Hence, it’s important to craft a catchy, click-worthy headline.

Let’s take an example to understand better:

Suppose we want to generate article title ideas for one of the topics from our article we’re writing to target the primary keyword – best financial management software. Here’s how ChatGPT can help you brainstorm creative title ideas.

Prompt

Context: I plan to write an article that focuses on the keyword ‘best financial management software.’ The article aims to provide valuable insights for individuals and businesses looking to optimize their financial operations through software solutions.

It will cover a range of topics, including comparisons of top software options, features to look for in financial management software, user experience, integration capabilities with other tools, and cost-effectiveness.

Goal: Suggest some engaging and SEO-friendly article title ideas that will attract readers interested in finding the best financial management software solutions.

Use Case 6. Create Article Briefs

It’s challenging to create an SEO-optimized article brief, especially when you’re looking to stand out from millions of other blogs

Use ChatGPT to create article briefs. Although the AI doesn’t exactly provide a brief, it gives a concrete outline that acts as a foundation for your blog post. The outline would include key sections, headers, subheaders, etc.

And with SEO into play, you’ll find the outlines already embedded with relevant keywords and phrases. However, make sure to iterate the outline with your research. Add relevant content to adapt the brief to your particular guidelines and writing style.

Prompt

Context: I plan to write an in-depth article titled ‘Unlocking Financial Success: Exploring the Best Financial Management Software Solutions.’ The article will target individuals and businesses looking to enhance their financial management practices through technology.

Goal: Provide a detailed article brief that outlines the key sections, points to cover, and any specific angles or considerations I should include to make the article comprehensive and engaging for my audience.

Use Case 7. Edit/Rewrite Content

ChatGPT is great at editing content for grammar, readability, and consciousness. Having trained in a vast text-based repository, it has an eye for enhancing dull-looking content.

Even better, unlike other editing tools, ChatGPT listens to your commands. You can use specific prompts to make the AI act as a native editor, subject matter expert, or reader to gain particular feedback and rewrite content to improve it further.

Prompt

Context: I have an article draft focused on [Brief Description of the Topic, e.g., ‘the latest trends in renewable energy technologies’]. The article is intended for [Specify Audience, e.g., ‘industry professionals looking to stay ahead of technological advancements’].

I’m seeking to enhance its readability, ensure grammatical accuracy, and enrich its content to engage my audience better.

Persona & Goal: Act as a native editor to refine the draft, a subject matter expert to validate its accuracy and suggest content improvements, and a reader to provide feedback on its overall impact. Specifically, I’d like you to:

  • Edit for Grammar and Readability: Check for any grammatical errors, awkward phrasing, or unclear sentences and correct them. Also, suggest ways to make the article more readable and engaging.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Highlight any technical inaccuracies or areas where additional detail could bolster the article’s authority and relevance. Feel free to suggest specific industry examples or recent studies that should be included.
  • Reader’s Perspective: Offer feedback on the article’s flow, interest level, and overall impact. Does it capture and maintain the reader’s interest? Are there sections that feel redundant or lacking depth?

Here is the text of my article: [Insert Article Text Here]

Use Case 8. Craft Optimized Meta Description

Meta descriptions are short summaries that appear below the title on SERPs. They help readers get a glance at your content. They also help search engines rank your content, improving click-through rates from search results.

Using ChatGPT, you can automate meta-description writing. You can specify details like character limits, primary keywords, and content to be included in the meta description.

👀 Note: Always edit the AI-generated meta description based on search intent and quality. Infuse necessary details, tweak any inconsistencies, and configure it to your brand voice.

Prompt

Goal: I need a meta-description for a webpage about [Brief Description of the Webpage Content, e.g., ‘the benefits of cloud computing for small businesses’].

Context: The primary keyword for this page is ‘[Primary Keyword]’. The character limit is 150 characters. The meta-description must be engaging, includes the primary keyword naturally, and aligns with the search intent of users looking for [Specify User Intent, e.g., ‘information on how cloud computing can benefit their small business operations’]

Chat link: https://chat.team-gpt.com/public/tanish/65c98dd398e6265bbee4116f

Use Case 9. Generate FAQs for the Article

Including a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section in your article is an excellent way of providing additional value to readers. It helps them skim through essential details quickly.

Fortunately, ChatGPT can help generate FAQs for your articles. Prompt the AI with the blog title or keywords and ask it to generate relevant, concise FAQs for the corresponding article.

To ensure specificity, provide a number for Q&As, as well as specify the length of each. The more specific you are with the prompts, the better outputs you can expect.

Prompt

I’ve written an article titled How to do SEO for E-commerce, which focuses on a step-by-step procedure to carry out a successful SEO campaign for an e-commerce store.

I’d like to include a FAQ section at the end to address common questions readers may have. Could you generate 5 FAQs for this article? Each Q&A should be no more than 100 words long to ensure they are concise yet informative.

Use Case 10. Generate Sitemaps

A sitemap is a list of all the important, relevant pages of your website that you want search engines to crawl and index.

Consider it as a blueprint of your website that helps search engines index your website’s content and find the relation between them. Sitemaps also make it easy for search engines to find new and updated pages more efficiently.

Luckily, ChatGPT can assist you in creating site maps. To create an XML sitemap using ChatGPT, use this prompt:

Prompt

I need to create an XML sitemap for my website to ensure search engines can efficiently crawl and index its pages. The website includes various sections such as – Home, About Us, Services, Blog, and Contact’.

I would like the sitemap to include URLs for all main pages and any significant subpages within those sections. Additionally, please include standard XML sitemap tags like <urlset>, <url>, <loc>, <lastmod>, and <changefreq>, and suggest appropriate values for <changefreq> and <priority> based on page importance and update frequency.

Help me structure this XML sitemap by providing a template or example entries for a few pages. Also, if there are any best practices for setting <lastmod>, <changefreq>, and <priority> values for different types of pages (e.g., home page, blog posts, contact page), include those recommendations.

How are SEO Experts using ChatGPT for SEO?

SEO pros are freely using AI for day-to-day SEO tasks. Here are some SEO use cases from them:

2. Make ChatGPT an Expert Keyword Researcher – Connor Gillivan

Here’s how Connor Gillivan makes ChatGPT an SEO expert and performs keyword research.

Connor explains a 3-step process you can adapt to do keyword research with ChatGPT.

Step 1. He makes ChatGPT an expert in SEO:

Prompt used: “You are an SEO Expert. You’ve been running SEO campaigns and creating SEO strategies for 10+ years. You’ve written SEO content. You’ve researched 1,000s of SEO keywords. 3. Use ChatGPT to Increase CTR – Andy Crestodina

Andy Crestodina, Co-Founder and CMO of Orbit Media, uses ChatGPT to increase CTR by improving title tags.

The main idea behind this use case is: You can increase traffic without higher rankings if you can improve your clickthrough rates (CTR) from search. And the title tag of the page is a big factor in CTRs because it’s usually the link in search results. Compelling titles get clicked.

He used a series of prompts and a structured process to execute the use case. You can read more about it in the article he wrote on Linkedin.

Can ChatGPT Replace Human SEO Expert?

ChatGPT for SEO or Human SEO Experts: This debate has been red hot in the market. Some believe AI will take over SEO, while others think it will transform SEO and help SEO experts become better at what they do.

It’s too early to know if AI is definitely a replacement for SEO experts.

If you ask us, we don’t see ChatGPT taking over SEO anytime soon. However, when it was launched, it acted as fuel to the fire.

Making our SEO friends forget that it’s just a language model trained on massive repositories of information. It can assist you with mundane SEO tasks like keyword research, on-page optimization, and more, but cannot replicate the work of human SEO experts.

However, using ChatGPT as an enhancer rather than a replacement sounds more fruitful. It can help automate repetitive tasks, saving time and boosting productivity.

That being said, using ChaGPT for SEO has its own benefits and limitations.

What are the Benefits of Using AI for SEO?

1. Quick Data Analysis and Insights

Over 16% of companies use AI to gauge customer sentiments.

AI tools can help analyze search trends, user behavior, patterns, and other technicalities from excessive data. Not only does it make the process faster, but it also provides accurate insights.

For example, a digital marketing agency has to plan an SEO strategy for a client in the fashion industry. The agency uses AI to analyze and examine data for patterns and similarities.

Within seconds, the AI identifies a growing interest in eco-friendly fashion. Using this insight, the agency’s SEO expert crafts an SEO-optimized strategy focused on eco-friendly fashion. This results in increased organic traffic and higher page rankings for relevant keywords.

2. Automation for Mundane Tasks

Using AI for SEO can help in automating repetitive tasks. Be it keyword research, rank tracking, backlink analysis, drafting documents, and more.

A sizable 68% of SEO experts intend to use AI tools for automating SEO processes, saving time, improving productivity, and focusing on other strategic tasks.

3. Helps in Content Optimization

AI can help brainstorm content ideas and topics based on particular keywords. Use it to generate topic clusters, blog outlines, content briefs, and more.

Additionally, employing AI for content improvement works. It helps enhance content quality while incorporating the essential SEO-focused terms and keywords within them.

A survey conducted by Thruu in 2023 suggested that over 89% of users are incorporating AI-generated content in their SEO and content creation workflow.

What are the Limitations of Using AI for SEO?

Generative AI has the potential to help in SEO tasks, but we must be careful not to depend on it too much. As exciting AI for SEO might sound, it’s essential to understand its risks, limitations, and ethical problems:

1. Flawed Responses

AI is great, but it’s not perfect. AI tools like ChatGPT are often blamed for hallucinating and making things up while losing context.

Remember: It’s not thinking, citing, or even pulling data from a database. It’s just looking at the next-word probabilities.

So technically, the AI is rephrasing from what it already has in the dataset. This makes it a must to double-check AI-generated advice, content, or research for factual accuracy and relevance.

2. Using it as an SEO Content Mill

So far, there’s no data-backed evidence of people accepting AI-generated, re-worded content over uniquely written content by subject matter experts (SMEs).

Using AI to generate SEO-optimized content at scale might benefit in the short-term but will worsen brand authenticity in the long run. Here’s a real-life example:

A few months ago, an SEO expert showed off an AI SEO project he did for Causal.app, a modern spreadsheet SaaS. His exaggerated 3.6M traffic gain over 18 months after posting 1,800 AI content articles at scale.

While it seemed that Causal was doing some good SEO work in 4-5 months, their AI content backfired, and the traffic tanked and zeroed over time.

3. Crafting Prompts Requires an SEO Understanding

Not everyone can use ChatGPT for SEO. You’d need to know the right prompts and follow-up commands and have a deep knowledge of SEO to verify the factual accuracy of responses generated by AI.

So we’d suggest you become an SEO expert yourself first and then use AI as an assistant to help you out with some of the SEO tasks you think it can help you with.

ChatGPT Powered Browser Extensions

ChatGPT’s interface is user-friendly, and I second that. However, it’s limiting, requiring you to copy-paste everything into the rectangular box.

To fully utilize this AI-powered chatbot, Chrome extensions are worth considering. We have curated a list of ChatGPT-powered browser extensions that can help in SEO tasks:

1. AIRPM

AIRPM is your cheat code for ChatGPT. It has a repository of over 4000+ ready-made prompt templates to be used instantly.

A centralized dashboard makes it easy to manage templates. You can also create and customize prompts to align with brand voice, tone, and writing style and share access to prompts with the entire team.

2. ChatGPT Summarize & Chat

ChatGPT Summary & Chat browser extension enables you to use ChatGPT to summarize or chat with websites and YouTube. It acts as your digital summarizer and conversationalist to:

  • Summarize web pages like landing page or blog content
  • Summarize the transcript of any YouTube video
  • Talk to competitor’s web pages (ask questions) to know their strategy

Additionally, you can use pre-built prompt templates to modify summaries for different use cases.

3. ChatGPT for Google

ChatGPT for Google enables you to enhance your browsing experience using AI. Using the extension, you can display ChatGPT’s response alongside search engine results from Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and other search engines.

Wrapping Up

Long answer short – using ChatGPT for SEO is a good thing. But the way you use it matters a lot. Blindly replying to AI-generated content and suggestions won’t get you anywhere.

Instead of thinking of using ChatGPT to save time, use it to enhance productivity.

One approach to do so is by putting your head together as a team and working on an SEO strategy together.

With Team-GPT, you can onboard your team on our platform and use ChatGPT as a team to devise an AI-assisted SEO strategy that can help you grow your brand’s visibility.
